What is infrared heat?

Simply stated, infrared is a light wave next to the color red on the electromagnetic spectrum that is invisible to the human eye but felt as heat.

Am I sweating enough?

When sitting in a hot sauna, we expect ourselves to sweat. We see pictures of people coming out drenched in sweat or coming out of the sauna completely soaked. But, when you step out of the sauna, you may find that you are barely wet, even if the sauna is at a high heat setting. You many wonder if you are still receiving the sauna detox benefits. The answer is yes! Even though your body is not drenched in sweat, your body is still detoxifying from harmful toxins, just feel your skin. Your skin will feel a little moist or possibly sticky.


Theory of sweat

Connie Zack, co-owner of Sunlighten saunas, explains that when you sweat in an infrared sauna, it is different than if you were sweating after a workout or on a hot day. You will feel that your sweat is thicker because the content of the sweat is more than just water. You are sweating toxins that are trapped in your body.


If after you step out of your sauna and you are not “sweating” feel your skin. Is it moist? Does it feel sticky? If the answer is yes, your body is releasing toxins. Some people sweat more than others. But, toxins are released during every session.

Because our infrared sauna is a dry heat, it’s safe to bring tablets or phones into the suite.

How do I burn calories?

By heating your core temperature and inducing sweating, infrared saunas increase blood flow and heart rate, much like moderate exercise, and can burn 400-600 calories in just one 30-minute session.

What do I wear?

Less is more. Typically, a bathing suit, sports bra and shorts or underwear are ideal for use in our infrared saunas (just be sure it’s free of plastic or metal fasteners or eyelets).

Is there anyone who should not sweat?

Saunas are not advisable for women who are pregnant, anyone with a pacemaker or those who have an inability to sweat. If you have any questions about a medical issued whether or not the sauna is suitable for your wellness, it is recommended that you consult your physician.

How is the sauna cleaned?

The good news is, infrared heat kills 99% of bacteria for a naturally sterile environment. But, we go a step further and clean the sauna suite in-between sessions with non-toxic cleaners.

What is chromotherapy?

Chromotherapy is the science of using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health and harmony. The belief that color is important in healing has been around for thousands of years rooted in the idea that specific colors in the spectrum of light positively affect your emotions.
